x-men 2099 Metalhead Trading Cards Mail Call
Road To 1994 Marvel Masterpieces Gold Foil Signature Parallel Set: #75 Metalhead.
Today's Mail Call and Road To: 1994 Marvel Masterpieces Gold Foil Signature Complete Set is Metalhead. I only need 3 more gold signatures to complete the parallel set. I'm missing cards #25 Cyclops, #47 Guardian, and #111 Silver Surfer. So, if you have these cards and are willing to sell or trade, slide me a DM! :) And, Make Mine Marvel! ⚡
Here’s the card of Metalhead (aka Edward van Beethoven-Osako or Eddie), a character from the X-Men 2099 first appeared in 1993. X-Men 2099 came out in the mid-1990s to boost falling sales from Marvel Comics. Therefore, Stan Lee and creators came up with the 2099 range. And, this was the future version of the current famous comic titles of Marvel (Hulk 2099, Spiderman 2099, Ghostrider 2099 and Punisher 2099 to name a few).
However, the whole idea of 2099 wasn’t very popular, and it showed financially. But, in recent years, there has been a cult following of nostalgia. And, this can be seen especially for Spiderman 2099 who featured in the movie “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” of 2018.
First, Metalhead was a musician before joining the X-Men in the year 2099.
And, he has the power to turn his skin into any metal he touches.
Also, he resembles the character Colossus.
The first time I saw this character, I thought that this was the new version of Colossus.
However, further reading into the comic and story line, not only was Metalhead a new character, but the whole roster of X-Men 2099 were totally new.
Then, the cover of X-Men 2099 Issue 1 has a special blue foil hardcover.
And, to me, it was very appealing just for the fact that it was shiny and more vibrant than the other comics I saw on the shelf in the stationery store.
So, that’s why this card is a special one: I like shiny things :)
Also, this card has the Gold Signature of the painters, Greg and Tim Hildebrandt.
The Brothers Hildebrandt are famous for their fantasy art from the world of The Lord of the Rings.
In addition, this gold signature card from the year 1994 is from the card set called Marvel MasterPieces by Fleer.
In fact, 1994 Marvel Masterpieces was a trading card collection by renowned fantasy artists The Hildebrandt Brothers Greg and Tim.
And, it featured paintings of heroes and villains from the Marvel Comics universe.
Also, this set is probably the most popular from the series.
In detail, it consists of 140 trading cards with 140 Gold signature cards (this is called a parallel set) and other chase cards.
And, each packet gives you 10 cards among which 1 will have a Gold Signature.
This series was part of my collection that I really liked as a young kid.
In fact, I started to collect these when they came out in the mid-90s.
And, just like everybody else around me, we all loved the vibrant artwork!
However, I was not so lucky in getting the “shinier” cards.
I only had about 10 Gold Signatures in my collection.
Now that I’m more active in creating sketch cards, I have rekindled my interest in finishing my childhood collection.
And, I have been lucky enough to have met really cool people in the non-sport trading card community. Some of them have become my online friends.
And, they have commissioned me to draw custom sketch cards of their favourite characters.
In return, I would sometimes ask to trade for missing cards in my collection.
To sum up, I am driven to finish collecting the 1994 Marvel Masterpieces set.
And this, purely for nostalgic purposes and to reminisce about collecting trading cards as a child. Therefore, I need 3 more to complete the parallel set!
